Virgil Abloh G-Wagon Project Geländewagen

Project Geländewagen is the one-off collaboration between Virgil Abloh (founder of Off-White and then artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear) and Gorden Wagener, chief design officer of Mercedes-Benz, unveiled in 2020 as a sculptural reimagining of the G-Class as a race car. Wagener and Abloh stripped the G-Class down to its DNA and then caricatured what remained, exaggerating the monolithic silhouette with oversized tires and a deliberately outsized spare wheel, in what the pair framed as a joint exploration of “the New Luxury.” It is a rare instance of a production Mercedes being treated purely as an art object rather than a vehicle, intended, in Abloh’s framing, to push young artists, engineers and designers to question the status quo.
